Tyrannidae - Tyrant Flycatchers
The Vermilion Flycatcher occurs in western Ecuador, where it inhabits open and semi-open habitats such as dry scrub, riparian woodlands, agricultural fields, and urban parks, typically from sea level to around 1,500 meters. It is generally uncommon but locally present, often seen perched conspicuously while sallying out to catch flying insects, with males displaying brilliant red plumage and engaging in aerial courtship flights. The species is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, with a vast Neotropical range and a population trend that appears stable or increasing despite localized habitat pressures. Natural history observations highlight its insectivorous diet, territorial behavior, and nesting in horizontal tree forks, often decorated with lichens and bound by spiderwebs.
