Psittacidae - New World Parrots
The Black-headed Parrot occurs in eastern Ecuador, where it inhabits humid lowland forests and adjacent clearings below about 800 meters, favoring areas with abundant fruiting trees and dense canopy cover. Though generally uncommon, it is locally present in suitable Amazonian habitats, often seen in small, noisy flocks moving through the mid-canopy. The species is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, with a broad range across northern South America and a stable population, though it is vulnerable to habitat loss and trapping in some regions. Natural history observations highlight its frugivorous diet, acrobatic foraging behavior, and cavity-nesting habits, with pairs often returning to favored nesting sites across seasons.
