The Andean Motmot occurs along both slopes of the Ecuadorian Andes, typically between 1,000 and 2,500 meters, where it inhabits humid montane forests, forest edges, and shaded ravines. It is generally uncommon but locally present, often seen perched quietly in the midstory or canopy, sallying out to catch insects and small vertebrates, and occasionally feeding on fruit. The species is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, with a broad Andean range and a stable population, though it may be sensitive to habitat fragmentation. Natural history observations highlight its vibrant plumage, racket-tipped tail, and burrow-nesting behavior in earthen banks, with breeding activity peaking during the rainy season.
