The Variable Seedeater is a widespread resident in Ecuador, occurring from lowlands up to about 1,500 m in open habitats such as grasslands, scrub, agricultural fields, and forest edges. It is common and often conspicuous, foraging in flocks or pairs on seeds and small insects, with males showing striking black-and-white plumage that varies geographically. The species is currently assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN, with stable populations across its broad range despite localized habitat changes. Its adaptability to disturbed environments and lively social behavior make it a familiar member of Ecuador’s open-country bird communities.
