The Pied Plover , also known as the Pied Lapwing, is a striking black-and-white shorebird found along sandy riverbanks and oxbow lakes in Ecuador’s Amazonian lowlands. Globally listed as Least Concern, its population appears stable, though it remains patchily distributed and sensitive to riparian habitat disturbance. This quiet, solitary species forages for insects and small invertebrates along exposed shorelines, often seen walking with deliberate steps and flashing its red eye-rings and legs. In Ecuador, it is most reliably encountered in undisturbed stretches of the Napo, Pastaza, and Aguarico river systems.
