The Black-throated Brilliant occurs in eastern Ecuador, ranging from the foothills to lower montane forests between approximately 400 and 1,450 meters, where it inhabits the interior of mature humid forest and dense scrublands. Though considered uncommon, it is regularly encountered in suitable habitat, often foraging solitarily at mid-levels and favoring flowering trees deep within forest cover. The species is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, but its population is suspected to be declining slowly due to forest loss across its range. A sedentary nectarivore, it shows no migratory behavior, and while its breeding biology remains poorly known, it is presumed to nest in concealed forest vegetation like other brilliants.
