The Black‑chested Mountain Tanager is a large, boldly patterned Andean tanager with bright yellow underparts, a black chest band, blue‑green upperparts, and a black hood. The wings are deep blue with darker edging, and the bill is thick and dark. Its crisp black chest band is the key field mark.
Species eBird Ecuador Link: Black-chested Mountain Tanager
In Ecuador, it inhabits humid montane forest, cloud‑forest edges, and elfin forest between 2,500 and 3,800 meters, especially on the eastern slope. It often joins mixed canopy flocks and moves deliberately through mossy branches.
Listed as Least Concern, though dependent on intact high‑elevation forest. It remains fairly common in protected Andean reserves.
This species often travels with other large mountain‑tanagers, forming colorful, noisy groups that brighten the cloud‑forest canopy. Its bold chest band makes it one of the easiest high‑elevation tanagers to identify.
