Thraupidae - Tanagers and Allies
The Black-capped Tanager occurs along both slopes of the Ecuadorian Andes, inhabiting humid montane forests, forest edges, and adjacent second growth typically between 1,800 and 3,200 meters. It is generally uncommon but regularly observed, often joining mixed-species flocks in the midstory and canopy, where it forages for fruit and insects with deliberate movements. The species is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, with a broad Andean range and a stable population that tolerates moderate habitat disturbance. Natural history observations highlight its striking black cap, turquoise-blue plumage, and quiet vocalizations, though its nesting biology in Ecuador remains poorly documented.
