Eurypygidae - Sunbittern
The Sunbittern (Eurypyga helias) occurs in eastern Ecuador, where it inhabits humid lowland forests, riparian corridors, and streamside thickets typically below 1,200 meters, favoring quiet, shaded waterways with abundant leaf litter and overhanging vegetation. Though generally uncommon, it is locally present in suitable habitat and has recently been recorded in southern Andean foothills, suggesting possible range expansion. The species is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, with a stable population across its broad Neotropical range, though it remains sensitive to deforestation and waterway disturbance. Natural history observations highlight its solitary, terrestrial foraging behavior, cryptic plumage, and striking wing displays used in courtship and predator deterrence; nesting occurs near water, with both parents involved in rearing the young.
