Amazona ochrocephala
Psittacidae - New World Parrots
The Yellow-crowned Amazon occurs in western Ecuador, where it inhabits lowland coastal forests, mangroves, and semi-open agricultural landscapes, typically below 600 meters. Though once more widespread, its occurrence is now fragmented and localized, with populations impacted by habitat loss and trapping for the pet trade. The species is currently listed as Least Concern globally by the IUCN, but the Ecuadorian population—sometimes treated as Amazona lilacina—is considered Endangered due to steep declines and restricted distribution. Natural history observations highlight its social roosting behavior, strong site fidelity, and frugivorous diet, with nesting in tree cavities and vocalizations that carry across forest edges and cultivated lands.
