The White-whiskered Hermit occurs in western Ecuador, ranging from Esmeraldas to El Oro Province, where it inhabits humid mid-elevation and montane forests, dense secondary growth, and plantations typically below 1,200 meters, though occasionally up to 2,000 meters. It is generally common in suitable habitat, often seen trap-lining through the understory for nectar and small arthropods, with seasonal elevational movements noted. The species is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, though its population is believed to be declining due to deforestation, making long-term survival dependent on habitat conservation. Natural history observations highlight its bronzy crown, white facial streaks, and cone-shaped nest suspended beneath drooping leaves, with breeding activity spanning roughly November to July.
