Parulidae - New World Warblers
The Blackburnian Warbler occurs in Ecuador as a non-breeding migrant, primarily in the eastern foothills of the Andes, where it favors humid montane forests and forest edges typically above 1,000 meters. It is generally uncommon but regularly observed during migration and wintering periods, often foraging high in the canopy for insects and occasionally joining mixed-species flocks. The species is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, with a large and increasing global population estimated at over 13 million mature individuals. Natural history observations highlight its striking flame-orange throat, canopy-gleaning behavior, and preference for mature forest habitats, with wintering individuals adapting to a range of wooded environments including shade-coffee plantations and secondary growth.
