Psittacidae - New World Parrots
The Mealy Amazon is a large, green parrot found year-round in Ecuador’s eastern lowland rainforests, particularly within the Amazon basin below about 1,000 meters, where it favors mature terra firme and floodplain forests. It is locally common but patchily distributed, often seen in small flocks feeding on fruits, seeds, and blossoms in the canopy, and occasionally visiting clay licks to aid digestion. Globally listed as Least Concern, its population is suspected to be declining due to habitat loss and trapping, though it persists in several protected areas. Known for its gentle demeanor and low, growling calls, the Mealy Amazon nests in tree cavities and exhibits strong pair bonds, with both parents sharing in chick-rearing duties.
