Tyrannidae - Tyrant Flycatchers
The Gray-capped Flycatcher occurs in western Ecuador, where it inhabits lowland and foothill forests, forest edges, second growth, and gardens typically below 1,200 meters. It is fairly common and conspicuous in suitable habitat, often seen singly or in pairs perched in the open, sallying out to catch insects and occasionally feeding on fruit. The species is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, with a vast Neotropical range and a stable population estimated between 5 and 50 million mature individuals. Natural history observations highlight its bright yellow underparts, subtle gray crown, and cavity-nesting behavior, with nests often placed in tree holes or sheltered crevices near human habitation.
