The Gray-crowned Flatbill occurs in eastern Ecuador, where it inhabits humid lowland forests, particularly terra firme and riverine woodlands below about 1,000 meters. Though generally uncommon and inconspicuous, it is locally present in suitable Amazonian habitat, often detected by its distinctive rising whistle and active foraging in the mid- to upper canopy. The species is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, with a broad range across the Amazon Basin and a stable population, though it may be affected by ongoing deforestation. Natural history observations highlight its insectivorous diet, horizontal posture, and bag-shaped nest with a tubular entrance, often suspended near wasp nests for added protection.
