The Plum-throated Cotinga occurs in eastern Ecuador, where it inhabits humid lowland forests, tropical swamps, and degraded former woodlands below about 600 meters, particularly in regions near the Napo and Pastaza river systems. Though generally uncommon and patchily distributed, it is locally present in suitable Amazonian habitat, often seen perched quietly in the canopy or making short sallies for fruit. The species is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, with a vast range across northern South America and a population suspected to be slowly declining due to forest loss. Natural history observations highlight its frugivorous diet, solitary behavior, and vivid plumage—males displaying a striking violet throat against powder-blue body feathers—though nesting habits remain poorly documented.
