The Rufous-chested Tanager is a montane species in Ecuador, occurring along both Andean slopes from about 1,500 to 3,500 m in cloud forests, forest edges, and shrubby clearings. It is generally uncommon but locally present, often seen in pairs or small flocks foraging for insects and fruits in the canopy and edges. The species is currently assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN, though its dependence on intact montane habitats makes it vulnerable to deforestation and fragmentation. Its striking rufous chest and lively behavior make it a distinctive member of Ecuador’s highland bird communities.
