Thraupidae - Tanagers and Allies
The Opal-crowned Tanager occurs in eastern Ecuador, where it inhabits humid lowland forests within the upper Amazon Basin, particularly in terra firme and riverine woodlands below about 800 meters. It is generally uncommon and patchily distributed, often seen in mixed-species flocks foraging for fruit and insects in the canopy, its shimmering crown and subtle plumage blending into the foliage. The species is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, with a broad Amazonian range and a population suspected to be slowly declining due to habitat loss. Natural history observations remain limited, but it is known to favor mature forest and exhibits social foraging behavior, with nesting biology still poorly documented.
