Trogonidae - Trogons
The Green-backed Trogon occurs in the humid lowland forests of eastern Ecuador, typically below 800 meters, where it inhabits mature forest interiors and well-vegetated river margins. Though generally uncommon, it is locally present in suitable Amazonian habitat, often seen perched quietly in the mid-canopy and foraging on fruit and insects. The species is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, with a broad range across northern South America and a population suspected to be slowly declining due to forest loss. Natural history observations highlight its sedentary behavior, sexual dimorphism, and cavity-nesting habits, with pairs often reusing tree holes or abandoned woodpecker nests during the breeding season.
