Azara's Spinetail occurs along both slopes of the Ecuadorian Andes, typically between 1,800 and 3,200 meters, where it inhabits humid montane forest edges, secondary growth, and shrubby clearings. It is generally common in suitable habitat, often detected by its sharp, chattering calls as it forages low in dense vegetation for insects and spiders. The species is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, with a broad Andean range and a stable population that tolerates moderate habitat disturbance. Natural history observations highlight its long tail, skulking behavior, and domed nests built in thick shrubs or tangles, with breeding timed to coincide with the rainy season.
