The Orange-cheeked Parrot is a boldly colored species found in Ecuador’s eastern lowland rainforests, particularly within humid Amazonian habitats below about 1,000 meters. It occurs year-round but is generally uncommon, traveling in pairs or small flocks and frequently visiting clay licks to ingest mineral-rich soil that aids in digestion of toxic fruits and seeds. Despite a suspected population decline due to deforestation, it is globally listed as Least Concern thanks to its wide range across northern South America. With its striking plumage—black head, orange cheeks, and vivid wing patches—it forages high in the canopy and occasionally feeds on wasp larvae, adding a curious twist to its frugivorous diet.
