The Purple-chested Hummingbird is a localized species in Ecuador, occurring mainly in the humid foothill and lowland forests of the northwest, from about 200 to 1,200 m. It is generally uncommon and patchily distributed, most often seen at forest edges and clearings where it feeds on nectar from flowering shrubs and trees, supplemented by small insects. The species is currently assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN, though its dependence on intact forest makes it vulnerable to ongoing deforestation in the Chocó bioregion. Its glittering purple breast and active foraging flight make it a striking yet elusive member of Ecuador’s hummingbird diversity
