The Powerful Woodpecker is a large, striking species of Ecuador’s humid montane forests, typically found between 1,700 and 2,600 meters on both Andean slopes. Globally listed as Least Concern, its population is decreasing, and in Ecuador it remains uncommon and patchily distributed, with sightings from provinces like Napo, Azuay, and Tungurahua. This woodpecker forages in pairs through mature forest interiors, using its chisel-like bill to excavate insects from decaying wood, though its diet and breeding habits remain poorly documented. With its bold plumage and deep, resonant drumming, it is a rare but unmistakable presence in Ecuador’s cloud forest canopy.
