Swallow-tailed Kite

The Swallow-tailed Kite is a striking migratory raptor that winters in eastern Ecuador, particularly in humid lowland forests and riparian corridors of provinces like Napo, Morona Santiago, and Zamora Chinchipe. Though uncommon, it is regularly observed gliding effortlessly over forest canopies, often in small groups, and favoring areas with tall emergent trees and abundant insect prey. The species is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, with a broad range extending from the southeastern United States to northern Argentina, though habitat loss has caused regional declines. Natural history records highlight its aerial grace, insectivorous diet, and monogamous breeding behavior, with nests built high in canopy trees and reused across seasons in parts of its range.
