Thraupidae - Tanagers and Allies
The Opal-rumped Tanager occurs in eastern Ecuador, where it inhabits humid lowland Amazonian forests, particularly terra firme and riverine woodlands below about 800 meters. It is generally uncommon and patchily distributed, often seen in mixed-species flocks foraging for fruit and insects in the canopy, its iridescent plumage catching light as it moves through dense foliage. The species is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, with a vast range across northern South America and a population suspected to be slowly declining due to habitat loss. Natural history observations highlight its social foraging behavior, striking opalescent rump, and preference for mature forest, though nesting biology remains poorly documented.
