The Orange-bellied Euphonia occurs in both western and eastern Ecuador, inhabiting humid lowland and montane forests, forest edges, and secondary growth typically from sea level up to about 1,800 meters. It is fairly common in suitable habitat, often seen in pairs or small flocks foraging for fruit, especially mistletoe berries, and occasionally insects. The species is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, with a vast Neotropical range and an estimated global population between 5 and 50 million mature individuals, though its numbers are thought to be slowly declining due to habitat loss. Natural history observations highlight its soft vocalizations, compact build, and striking plumage—males with a yellow crown and orange belly—along with its tendency to nest in concealed sites such as epiphyte tangles or dense foliage.
