Silvicultrix frontalis
Tyrannidae - Tyrant Flycatchers
The Crowned Chat-Tyrant occurs along both slopes of the Ecuadorian Andes, inhabiting humid montane forests, forest edges, and elfin woodland typically between 2,500 and 3,500 meters. It is generally uncommon but regularly observed, often perching conspicuously at mid-levels or darting out to catch insects, with its bold crown pattern and upright posture making it one of the more distinctive highland flycatchers. The species is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, with a broad Andean range and a stable population that tolerates moderate habitat disturbance. Natural history observations highlight its territorial behavior, sharp vocalizations, and preference for mossy forest interiors, though its nesting biology in Ecuador remains poorly documented.
