Grallariidae - Antpittas
The Equatorial Antpitta occurs along both slopes of the Ecuadorian Andes, ranging from northern provinces like Carchi and Pichincha southward into northern Peru, where it inhabits humid montane forests typically between 1,800 and 3,000 meters. It is generally rare and highly elusive, favoring steep, mossy ravines and dense understory, and is far more often heard than seen, with its distinctive whistled song aiding detection during surveys. Though recently elevated to species status from the Grallaria rufula complex, it is currently listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, though its fragmented range and sensitivity to habitat loss suggest a need for monitoring. Natural history observations highlight its terrestrial insectivory, cryptic plumage, and preference for mature forest interiors, while its breeding biology remains virtually unknown.
