Thraupidae - Tanagers and Allies
The Chestnut-bellied Seedeater occurs in the lowland regions of eastern Ecuador, particularly in the Amazon basin below 600 meters, where it inhabits grassy clearings, river edges, and shrubby secondary growth. It is generally uncommon and patchily distributed, often seen in pairs or small flocks foraging for seeds in open habitats, with males showing distinctive chestnut underparts and black hoods. The species is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, with a broad Amazonian range and a stable population, though it may be locally affected by habitat alteration. Natural history observations highlight its seasonal movements, soft vocalizations, and cup-shaped nests built in low vegetation, with breeding activity timed to coincide with the rainy season.
