Icteridae - Troupials, Orioles and Allies
The Mountain Cacique occurs along both slopes of the Ecuadorian Andes, inhabiting humid montane forests, forest edges, and adjacent clearings typically between 1,800 and 3,500 meters. It is generally uncommon but locally present, often seen in small, noisy groups foraging in the canopy for insects, fruit, and nectar, with its glossy black plumage and yellow rump making it conspicuous in flight. The species is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, with a broad Andean range and a stable population that tolerates moderate habitat disturbance. Natural history observations highlight its colonial nesting behavior, preference for tall trees near forest openings, and complex vocalizations, though breeding details in Ecuador remain lightly documented.
