Tyrannidae - Tyrant Flycatchers
The Brown-backed Chat-Tyrant occurs widely across high-elevation habitats in the Ecuadorian Andes, typically between 2,800 and 4,200 meters, where it inhabits páramo grasslands, shrubby slopes, and elfin forest edges. It is generally uncommon but regularly observed, often seen perched on low shrubs or rocks, sallying out to catch insects with quick, darting flights. The species is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, with a broad Andean range and a stable population that tolerates moderate habitat disturbance. Natural history observations highlight its upright posture, rich vocalizations, and cup-shaped nests built in sheltered crevices or vegetation, with breeding timed to coincide with the rainy season.
