Saltator atripennis
Thraupidae - Tanagers and Allies
I first encountered this species at the Guaycapi Lodge where I only managed two quick shots. I was happy to add one more Saltator species to join with my images of Buff-throated, Black-headed and Cinnamon-bellied. The Black‑winged Saltator is a handsome Chocó species with slate‑gray upperparts, black wings, a white eyebrow, and a warm buffy belly. The bill is thick and dark, and the tail is long and slightly rounded.
Species eBird Ecuador Link: Black-winged Saltator
In Ecuador, it is restricted to the northwest Chocó lowlands and foothills, inhabiting humid forest edges, clearings, and second growth below about 1,200 meters. It is often seen in pairs or small groups.
This species is known for its rich, mellow whistles, often delivered from mid‑story perches. Its contrasting black wings and pale eyebrow make it one of the most distinctive saltators in Ecuador.
Listed as Least Concern, though tied to the threatened Chocó region. It remains locally common where forest persists.
