Thraupidae - Tanagers and Allies
The Black-winged Saltator (Saltator atripennis) occurs in the Andean foothills of western Ecuador, typically inhabiting subtropical and tropical moist montane forests between 200 and 2,200 meters. It is generally uncommon but locally present, often seen in pairs or small groups moving through the midstory and canopy, occasionally joining mixed-species flocks. The species is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, with a broad range and no evidence of rapid population decline, though its numbers have not been precisely quantified. Natural history observations highlight its bold facial markings, fruit- and insect-based diet, and preference for forest interiors over gardens or heavily degraded areas.
