Capitonidae - New World Barbets
The Lemon-throated Barbet occurs in the eastern lowlands of Ecuador, where it inhabits humid terra firme forests, particularly near oxbow lakes, forest streams, and swampy margins below 1,000 meters. It is generally uncommon but locally present, often seen in the canopy or midstory, foraging for fruit and insects and occasionally joining mixed-species flocks. The species is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, with a broad Amazonian range and a population suspected to be slowly declining due to ongoing deforestation. Natural history observations highlight its vivid plumage—males with red crowns and lemon-yellow throats—and its low, rolling vocalizations, though its nesting biology in Ecuador remains poorly documented.
