In Ecuador, the Tyrian Metaltail is a widespread Andean hummingbird found from roughly 2,000 to 4,000 meters, inhabiting humid montane forests, elfin woodlands, and páramo edges. It occurs throughout the highlands, with local subspecies such as M. t. quitensis showing subtle plumage and bill differences. Although forest loss has caused a slight population decline, the species remains common and is currently listed as Least Concern by the IUCN. A solitary nectar-feeder, it often perches low and defends favored flowers, showing a preference for native shrubs and small trees in its cool, misty habitat.
