The Agami Heron is a secretive and visually stunning bird of Ecuador’s Amazonian lowlands, where it inhabits dense riparian forests, swampy margins, and shaded streams below 300 meters. Globally listed as Near Threatened due to accelerating deforestation, it remains rare and elusive in Ecuador, with a notable nesting colony discovered in Tambococha, Yasuní National Park, hosting around 140 individuals. Known for its chestnut belly, iridescent green wings, and wispy blue plumes, the species feeds quietly on fish and aquatic invertebrates, often concealed in tangled vegetation. Despite its broad Neotropical range, the Agami Heron’s cryptic habits and inaccessible habitats make it one of the least observed herons in the region.
