The Lesser Violetear is a vibrant hummingbird found across both slopes of the Ecuadorian Andes, typically inhabiting humid montane forests, forest edges, and clearings between 1,200 and 2,300 meters elevation. It is locally common and often detected by its persistent, high-pitched “tsu-tzeek” song, delivered from exposed perches at loose leks where males defend nectar-rich territories. Globally listed as Least Concern, the species maintains a broad range and stable population, though habitat degradation may be causing slow declines. Solitary in its foraging habits, it feeds on nectar and small arthropods, and nests are built in sheltered spots, with both sexes resembling each other in their glittering green plumage and violet cheek patches.
