The Purple-backed Thornbill is a high-Andean hummingbird in Ecuador, occurring from about 2,500 to 4,000 m along both slopes in elfin forest, páramo edges, and shrubby clearings. It is generally uncommon but locally present, often seen foraging at small flowers close to the ground and noted for its tiny size and distinctive short tail with white tips. The species is currently assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN, though its specialized montane habitats make it vulnerable to climate change and habitat alteration. Its glittering purple back and delicate behavior mark it as one of the most distinctive miniature hummingbirds of Ecuador’s highlands.
