The Scarlet-backed Woodpecker is a localized resident of western Ecuador, found mainly in dry and semi-humid lowland forests, agricultural areas, and wooded gardens from sea level up to about 1,500 m. It is generally uncommon but can be conspicuous where suitable habitat remains, often seen foraging on trunks and branches for insects and larvae. The species is currently assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN, though ongoing deforestation and habitat conversion may pose localized threats. Its vivid scarlet back and lively drumming make it a striking member of Ecuador’s lowland bird communities.
