In Ecuador, the White-capped Dipper is an uncommon but specialized resident of fast-flowing Andean streams, typically found between 1,000 and 3,900 meters on both slopes. This striking black-and-white songbird forages along boulders and turbulent waters, diving and walking underwater in search of aquatic invertebrates. It nests during the drier months, building mossy, dome-shaped nests often tucked into streamside crevices. Though its population is stable and listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, its dependence on pristine riparian habitats makes it vulnerable to watershed degradation and deforestation.
