Napo Sabrewing
Napo Sabrewing
Campylopterus villaviscensio
Trochilidae - Hummingbirds
The Napo Sabrewing is a rare and localized hummingbird of eastern Ecuador, restricted to humid foothill and montane forests along the Napo River basin between about 600 and 1,200 m. It occurs patchily and is seldom seen, usually foraging at forest edges and clearings where it feeds on nectar from tubular flowers and supplements its diet with small insects. The species is currently assessed as Near Threatened by the IUCN, with its limited range and ongoing deforestation in the Amazonian foothills posing serious threats. Its large size, glittering green plumage, and distinctive curved bill make it one of the most remarkable yet elusive hummingbirds of Ecuador’s avifauna.
