The Gorgeted Sunangel inhabits humid premontane forests and damp ravines along the western Andean slopes of Ecuador, ranging from roughly 1,200 to 2,800 meters in elevation, though it is uncommon at higher altitudes. Its distribution is patchy but consistent within this elevational band, and it is typically found foraging alone in dense cover, avoiding open areas. The species is currently listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, though its specialized habitat preferences make it sensitive to forest degradation. Natural history observations suggest territorial nectar-feeding behavior, seasonal altitudinal movements, and a breeding season that peaks between October and December.
