Cotingidae - Cotingas
The Green-and-black Fruiteater occurs on both slopes of the Ecuadorian Andes, inhabiting humid montane and cloud forests typically between 1,500 and 2,700 meters. It is generally uncommon but regularly encountered in mature forest interiors, often seen singly or in pairs foraging quietly for fruit in the middle strata, with males distinguished by their black head and yellow collar. The species is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, with a broad Andean range and a population considered stable despite modest declines from habitat loss. Natural history observations highlight its frugivorous diet, soft high-pitched vocalizations, and preference for undisturbed forest, though nesting biology remains poorly documented.
