The Black-cheeked Woodpecker is a widespread resident of western Ecuador, occurring from sea level up to about 1,500 m in humid lowland and foothill forests, edges, and semi-open areas. It is fairly common, often seen clinging to tree trunks or moving through mixed-species flocks while foraging for insects, fruits, and nectar. The species is currently assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN, thanks to its adaptability and broad range, though localized deforestation may reduce populations. Its bold facial pattern and lively drumming make it a conspicuous member of Ecuador’s forest bird community.
