Icteridae - Troupials, Orioles and Allies
The Russet-backed Oropendola occurs in eastern Ecuador, where it inhabits humid lowland and foothill forests, especially along rivers and in terra firme woodland up to about 2,500 meters. It is generally common in suitable habitat, often seen in noisy colonies where it builds long, pendulous nests in tall trees, sometimes near human settlements. The species is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, with a vast Amazonian and Andean range, though its population is suspected to be slowly declining due to deforestation. Natural history observations highlight its social breeding behavior, striking yellow tail feathers, and varied vocalizations, with males often performing display flights around nesting sites.
