Cotingidae - Cotingas
The Spangled Cotinga occurs in eastern Ecuador, where it inhabits humid lowland Amazonian forests, particularly terra firme and riverine canopy zones below about 600 meters. Though generally rare and inconspicuous, it is locally present in suitable habitat, often seen perched silently in the upper canopy, its iridescent blue plumage catching sunlight as it forages for fruit. The species is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN due to its vast range across northern South America, though its population is suspected to be slowly declining from ongoing deforestation. Natural history observations highlight its solitary behavior, frugivorous diet, and limited vocalizations, with nesting habits remaining poorly documented due to its elusive canopy lifestyle.
