The Gray-browed Brushfinch occurs along both slopes of the Ecuadorian Andes, inhabiting humid montane forests, forest edges, and dense secondary growth typically between 1,800 and 3,200 meters. It is generally uncommon but locally present, often seen foraging near the ground in pairs or small groups, with its bold facial pattern and rich vocalizations making it one of the more conspicuous understory birds. The species is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, with a broad Andean range and a stable population that tolerates moderate habitat disturbance. Natural history observations highlight its terrestrial insectivory, frequent tail-flicking behavior, and preference for mossy ravines and bamboo thickets, though its nesting biology in Ecuador remains lightly documented.
