The Great Antshrike is a scarce resident in Ecuador, restricted mainly to the southwest lowlands and foothills, where it inhabits dense thickets, secondary growth, and forest edges from sea level up to about 1,200 m. It is usually solitary or in pairs, moving quietly through undergrowth as it forages for insects and small vertebrates. The species is currently assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN, though its limited range in Ecuador and ongoing habitat loss make it vulnerable to local declines. Its bold plumage and loud, whistled song mark it as one of the more conspicuous antbirds in suitable habitat.
