The Giant Cowbird occurs in lowland and foothill regions of western and eastern Ecuador, typically below 1,500 meters, where it inhabits forest edges, riverine corridors, agricultural areas, and open woodlands. It is generally uncommon but locally present, often seen in small flocks foraging for insects and seeds, and frequently associating with livestock or following army ant swarms. The species is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, with a broad Neotropical range and a stable population, though its dependence on host species for brood parasitism may influence local abundance. Natural history observations highlight its glossy black plumage, loud vocalizations, and parasitic nesting behavior, particularly targeting oropendolas and caciques during the breeding season.
