Troglodytidae - Wrens
The Gray-breasted Wood-Wren occurs widely along both slopes of the Ecuadorian Andes, inhabiting humid montane forests, forest edges, and dense understory typically between 1,200 and 3,000 meters. It is generally common in suitable habitat, often heard more than seen, delivering its rich, melodious song from low thickets near streams or mossy ravines. The species is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, with a broad Neotropical range and a stable population that tolerates moderate habitat disturbance. Natural history observations highlight its insectivorous diet, dome-shaped nests built close to the ground, and strong site fidelity, though subspecific variation and breeding ecology in Ecuador remain under study.
