Cotingidae - Cotingas
The Purple-throated Fruitcrow occurs in eastern Ecuador, where it inhabits humid lowland forests, particularly terra firme and riverine woodlands below about 800 meters. Though generally uncommon, it is locally present and often detected by its noisy, chattering groups moving through the canopy in search of fruit and large insects. The species is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, with a vast Amazonian range and a global population estimated between 5 and 50 million mature individuals, though its numbers are thought to be slowly declining due to habitat loss. Natural history observations highlight its colonial nesting behavior, conspicuous vocalizations, and striking plumage—glossy black with a vivid purple-red throat patch in males—that makes it one of the more charismatic members of the cotinga family.
